Hueco Spring '11

We made it to Hueco in under 10 hours, the drive was relaxing and smooth.

After arriving, Ranger Wanda was exceptionally cool, helping us arrange financials for the week and allowing us to climb on North Mountain that afternoon, which was an unexpected surprise.

It had been nearly six years since I last climbed at Hueco and Amber's first visit. I was hesitant to return given the cramped climbing / camping conditions and restricted climbing access.

Some good friends suggested we trying camping in the Park, which they had recently done and enjoyed. We were able to get camping reservations... the park offered huge camp sites, shade structures, beautiful views, working toilets, running water, electricity and clean showers with hot water.

My goal was to climb one classic line per day, preferably something new... and I wanted to climb everyday. We would usually climb several hours in the early morning... then go back to our campsite for lunch and relaxation... then going back out for a brief evening session or art tour.

Our spring visit to Hueco was by far my most enjoyable visit to Hueco... a total escape from the frustration of professional life. The park was almost empty, we were often the only ones in the Park for several hours in the morning. The temperatures were tolerable, although shade climbing was highly preferable.
